Huron Pines, located in Grayling, Michigan, is an organization dedicated to conserving the forests, lakes and streams of Northeast Michigan. They are perhaps best known as expert stream restoration specialists. However, in 2007 they began helping conservation efforts in Michigan in a different way. They are administering a grant program which places 10 fulltime Americorp volunteers with different conservation organizations in Michigan. Michigan council of Trout Unlimited is one of those groups benefiting from this effort, and its allowing us to do many things we otherwise would not be able to. We commend Huron Pines for taking on this progressive program and for being a great partner in conserving the natural resources of Michigan. Thank you Huron Pines. Read More...
The Land Policy Institute at Michigan State University and Heart of the Lakes Center for Land Conservation Policy jointly help produce a report on how Michigan ranks within the United States in the abundance of different natural resources and public lands, and also where it ranks on the level of funding it provides to manage those resources. The report found that while Michigan ranks toward the top in abundance of resources, it ranks at the very bottom in the level of funding it provides for conservation. This research will help to raise awareness of the financial challenges we face in maintaining our natural resources here in Michigan. www.heartofthelakes.org and www.landpolicy.msu.edu
