Aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling is widely used to assess the overall health of aquatic systems and is especially useful in areas with surface pollution. In Michigan, there are simple accepted protocols for monitoring aquatic macroinvertebrates. These protocols are used by the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps). MITU’s participation in the MiCorps program helps increase the programs focus on coldwater streams. Several chapters throughout Michigan participate in the DNRE run MiCorps program. This program provides methods and training for monitoring aquatic macroinvertebrates and stream habitat. Data collected through the MiCorps program is put into a DNRE database.
MiCorps monitoring is especially useful in areas with surface pollution (i.e. agriculture, industrial, mining, etc.) and for long term monitoring of healthy streams. Changes in the macroinvertebrate community can quickly alert volunteers and agencies to a change in water quality.
