Michigan Trout Unlimited is the coordination and representation for 20 local chapters of TU and over 7,000 individuals, devoted to the conservation, protection and restoration of Michigan's coldwater fish and their watersheds. Michigan is blessed with a vast wealth of wonderful and unique trout streams, over 11,000 inland lakes, and the largest sources of cold freshwater in North America - the Great Lakes. Michigan TU does whatever it takes to advocate for the prudent management of these resources, including on-the-ground stream improvements, angler & steward education, research, partnerships and collaboration with other conservation groups and governmental agencies, and policy development. Michigan is the birthplace of Trout Unlimited, and Michigan TU continues that proud heritage with its work today.
Your Michigan Trout Unlimited is actively engaged on a number of key environmental struggles that place our coldwater resources in jeopardy – especially so on the Pigeon River. Because of our deep commitment to these concerns, we are in need of immediate help from our supporters. The court case to remove the Pigeon River Dam continues in spite of our gains and the favorable decisions we have fought hard to achieve.
As we step up our efforts to remove outdated dams, avoid harmful water withdrawals and among other things, ensure that the oil, gas and mining industries do as they should with respect to our fisheries, we increasingly find ourselves drawn into court instead of a welcoming stream. These key battles that continually arise require substantial resources to pay for fees associated with essential legal representation and associated engineering expertise and specialized consultants.
Today’s realities also dictate that all too often these struggles occur in courtrooms across the state. As a result, the Board of Directors has just approved the formation of the Michigan Trout Unlimited Legal Defense Fund as a means to ensure our voices continue to count in court decisions that will impact future generations and our cold, clean waters.
